[ switching to voice, because having his hands and eyes occupied here isn't a good idea. he sounds shaken, but he's keeping it together. which is some definite progress.

[chief sounds steady and calm, which he thinks is exactly what jackson needs.]

I'm out of the Mist, there's a way out. Stay on the line with me and I'll walk you out, but you need to move.

[ it is exactly what he needs, given that he's breathing raggedly, tired but not completely panicked. ]

Okay. [ A pause and there's the sound of his sneakers scraping on the pavement ] Okay. Yeah. Sounds good. How can you tell where anything in here is?

Visibility is near zero. What I need you to do is look for something, do you see a light?

[ There's a pause as he's glancing around every which way, squinting into the thick fog. Shit. ]

No... nothing. Just... more mist. It goes on for goddamn ever.

[ A snort, and he's rolling his eyes, despite the fact Chief can't see. ] Not helping.

Okay, hold on. [ He'd going to trek around a little more, squinting. Finding a stalled car, Jackson climbs up on top of it to get a better glances around, and then - oh. There. Maybe that's something. ] I think... maybe. There's something. Could just be a reflection.

Is it shimmering or is it stationary? If it shimmers, run.

It's... [ omfg is it shimmering? is it? he takes a moment to squint and be ready to run. ]

[ He goes from walking towards the light to full on running towards it. There's skittering behind him and he knows what it is - those things trying to get him before he gets out, and he picks up the pace, going into a supernatural speed.

By the time he breaks from the mist and sees Chief standing up ahead, he's heaving his breaths something hideous and doesn't stop until he's actually past Chief.

He's a little too winded then, and curls over a little, hands on his knees as he looks back at the mist, watching shadows scatter off. ]

[chief moves to be a shield between jackson's body and the shadows, letting the boy catch his breath. before long, he's kneeling at jackson's side, hand comforting on his back.]

Good job. You're alive.

[ He's heaving breaths for a while, but there's a pat on his back and holy shit, is chief actually approving of him? Or showing any kind of kindness? And that day the Grinch's heart grew just a little bit bigger, and Jackson might have entertained the thought of actually placing value in someone that isn't Wesley or Allison or Lydia. ]

For now. [ There's a breathless laugh, shaking his head. ] Thanks for the light.

[chief is stern because he is honest. he's been raised to meet only the highest of expectations, and ever since then it's been that if he fails a mission it's a critical mission failure.

but he's also known for his soft spot for his fellow soldiers. he's not a machine, though people would have him think it.]

You'll be fine. [he pulls him up by the arm.] Come on, lets keep moving.

[ a humored snort leaves him for the 'you'll be fine', but he moves with him as chief hauls him up, turning to look towards town. ]

So what's up there? Zombies storming the place, or dinosaurs, or crack addicts?

[chief looks out at nothing in particular, as if he was just waiting for a large something to come out of the mist.]

Don't think we want to stay around to find out.

[ he's meant the town itself, raising a hand to point towards it. ]

Is there anything besides the town? Doubt we have much of a choice. COMPASS doesn't work that way.
